Henna prep and aftercare guide
A little care before and after your appointment makes a big difference to how deep and long-lasting your henna stain turns out. This is general guidance; always follow any specific instructions Amal gives you on the day.
Before your appointment
- Arrive with the area receiving henna clean and completely dry.
- Avoid lotions, oils and fake tan on that skin beforehand.
- Wear something comfortable that you do not mind being near the henna while it dries.
- Allow time for the henna to dry before you go on with your day.
Right after your henna
- Let the paste dry fully and leave it on for as long as you comfortably can. Several hours is common, and overnight is even better if you can.
- Keep the paste in place and avoid water while it is on.
- Many people dab a gentle mix of lemon juice and sugar on dry paste to help it stay on.
- Keep the area warm and avoid anything that makes you sweat heavily.
Removing the paste
When you are ready, gently flake or rub the dried paste away. Avoid washing the area with water straight away. The stain starts a pale orange and deepens to a rich reddish brown over the next day or two.
Keeping the stain longer
- Rub a little natural oil or balm onto the area after removing the paste and before showering.
- Limit long soaks, swimming pools, harsh soaps and scrubbing.
- Moisturise regularly, since well-looked-after skin holds the stain better.
Henna usually lasts from one to three weeks, depending on your skin and how you look after it. Hands and feet tend to stain the deepest.

Frequently asked questions
How long does henna last?
Henna usually lasts one to three weeks, depending on your skin and aftercare. The stain is deepest on hands and feet.
When will my henna stain look darkest?
The stain starts a pale orange and darkens to a rich reddish brown over the next 24 to 48 hours.
Can I wash my hands after henna?
